Matthew D Rao, CKD
Owner and Principal
A thought and design leader in the field of kitchen and bathroom design, Matthew promotes a deeply held belief that the kitchen is a nexus for creating meaning and connection. For nearly three decades, Matthew’s quiet yet unwavering dedication to design excellence has garnered local and national awards and publication. A devoted Atlanta and national community of clients, staff, and artisans both supports and cherishes Matthew’s brilliant, positive and relational work.
Educated at the Georgia Tech College of Architecture as an Industrial Designer, Matthew has impacted the course of design not just in kitchens but in architecture and lifestyle. His design legacy is fueled by architectural, artistic, social and ecocentric passions for farm to school food initiatives, kitchens for low income housing, urban design and cities, art, cooking, photography, travel and downhill skiing. A transplant from the Los Angeles area, Matthew has made Atlanta his home since high school.
Matthew’s vision for RAO Design Studio from its beginnings in 2003 is that it be a place where a small group of clients each year finds creativity, function, expert advice, and service, from the design side and as it provides the best in cabinetry, appliances, countertops, and all the other materials for them.
Always listening for what is occurring in the lives of his clients, and for what isn’t possible right now, Matthew has a mission to fill the gap between “what is” and “what could be” with his design and the projects he undertakes.
Matthew has been associated with the SieMatic brand since 1990, and worked for the manufacturer until 2002 at its ADAC showroom in Atlanta. After a year of re-thinking his career in 2002-2003, he started RAO Design Studio to offer a more comprehensive process for kitchens.
